What are Food Allergies?
Food allergies happen when your body’s immune system mistakenly sees certain food proteins as harmful.
This triggers allergic reactions, like itching, swelling, or stomach problems. Some foods, like nuts, milk, or eggs, cause allergies more often than others.
No one knows exactly why some people get food allergies and others don’t.
Natasha’s Story and the Law That Followed
In 2016, 15-year-old Natasha Ednan-Laperouse bought a baguette from a UK airport shop before boarding a flight. The sandwich didn’t list allergen information, which wasn’t required by law at the time. Natasha had a severe allergic reaction during the flight and, despite her father using two EpiPen injections, a life-saving medication used when someone is experiencing a severe allergic reaction, she tragically passed away.
An investigation showed the lack of clear labelling contributed to her death. In response, her parents campaigned for change. Their efforts led to Natasha’s Law, introduced in October 2021, which now requires UK food businesses to list all ingredients and allergens on food made and packed on-site for direct sale.
